All my friends in the Army felt very welcome in Germany.

Concur! Germans loved American GIs so long as the Soviet army was knocking at their door.

I arrived on duty there the first time in early November 63.
At that time there were six 10-man "A" Teams in Berlin in reasonable cover but not what I would call deep cover. That changed to black later. I was one of the 2 demolition and explosive experts on one of the teams. I absolutely luved the assignment. I'd luv to write a book about those jobs - covert and not; authorized and not.

Had just spent the previous year in the 5th Special Forces Group. I left Berlin and went to the 3rd SFG which was gearing up for Africa at the time; then back to the 5th again later; and back to Berlin again after that as a team leader. Then had another 3 1/2 year overseas assignment making nearly 11 years total overseas.

Berlin most impressed me after JFK was shot, which was a few weeks after I first arrived. They shut the entire city down for 30 days of mourning. I have never seen anything like it before or since.

It was definitely the city of a million spies.
