ElM, they find that with identical twins. There was the idea that nurture is what determines people, so they thought that identical twins raised apart and living apart would increasingly diverge during life. But in fact, after their younger days, they start to converge, because, as you say, the restrictions of work, family and social convention hold less power over them, so they are more self-determined. Since they have identical DNA, that means they become more like each other, rather than less.

It turns out that genetics is far more important than people want to admit. Racism got such bad press for so long that people stopped thinking and invented new stupid ideas to replace the old stupid idea.

It's rather obvious that DNA is the dominant effect in how people are. Look at different breeds of dogs for example. All one species, but each variety has its own nature.

There is a pretence these days that we are all just fungible blank slates. That's silly.
