Style might be due

The Irish step-dancing that Flatley does is the basic Folk Dance of Ireland. Kids spend years learning the dance, and are judged by standards going back Centuries. You keep your body rigid and only move your legs and feet.

What Flatley and the his troop did with the original "Riverdance" was to open it up. They used other music and moved their arms. That was a huge shock to the traditional Irish, but they did it so well that they got away with it. Flatley was born in Chicago and was the first non-citizen to win the "All Ireland" step-dancing competition. He also won the All Ireland Flute and is an accomplished boxer.

Same thing happened with Rock and Roll and the Rhythm and Blues that came out of Black Church music. If you saw the movie, "Ray," they spent some time on how much opposition there was to Ray Charles using "Call and Response" in his music.

Fred started with his sister in Vaudeville and took the basic dancing being done on stage at the turn of the 20th Century, added Tap, which came from Irish Step, and the dances of Vern and Irene Castle. He invented modern dancing.
