Huckabee Nabs Falwell Jr.'s Support

blog.washingtonpost.com

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee won the endorsement of Jerry Falwell Jr., the son of the late Christian Coalition founder, boosting further his efforts to woo evangelical voters and Christian conservatives in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

The pair appeared Wednesday morning together at Liberty University, where the younger Falwell has taken over the presidency of the institution his father founded. A statement announcing the endorsement did not quote Falwell or give any reasons for his endorsement of Huckabee.

Huckabee said in the release that "I knew Jerry's dad for more than 30 years and have admired the long tradition of Liberty University and the legacy for creating 'Champions for Christ.' Dr. Falwell's vision of helping students to start with nothing to believe they can change the world is exactly what our campaign is all about."

The endorsement is the latest effort by Huckabee to build on what his campaign believes is its strength: the former Arkansas governor's appeal in the religious, evangelical community. Support within that community in Iowa has propelled Huckabee to a virtual tie with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney in the Hawkeye State.

But it is unclear how much impact the younger Falwell's endorsement will have. His father's influence in the political process had already waned before his death. And other major players in the conservative Christian community have splintered among the Republican candidates.
