Raise taxes and you'll greatly encourage government to freely spend more.

At least it's visible; people have to pay for it and so many people will push back and maybe throw the bums out. As long as the spending goes to debt everybody thinks it's a free ride. Until the rude awakening comes...

But Clinton managed to raise taxes, curtail spending AND the economy boomed during his years...maybe it was partly timing, but it did.

The truth is that in debt terms, republicans have been responsible for the dramatic increase in the national debt, yet their propaganda machine has managed to paint democrats in this light. We would have a far more manageable SS problem on our children if the debt was small...even if spending was merely contained at present levels.
