Some Chinese products are excellent. My Ryobi cordless drill, for example.

Others look better than they are, primarily due to lack of testing manufacturing tolerances on an otherwise good design. With more attention to testing, they would become much better products with not much extra cost.

Garden hose nozzle kits are my favorite example. They look great and sometimes work well for a while, but I've had more than one blow up in my face, and they usually fall apart after moderate use.

I'm not sure how people in this country are going to make a living. My wife collects Fenton art glass, which has been made for over 100 years in Wheeling West Virginia. They recently closed their production line because they couldn't compete with Chinese glassware.

She found some glassware in a Hallmark shop that appeared to be Fenton, but was very moderately priced compared to Fenton. It was Chinese. On close inspection you could see differences in the quality, but it was fundamentally similar to the unpracticed eye.

She felt like a traitor for buying a few pieces, but justified it by planning to put them into active use where they might be broken. Her Fenton art glass is too valuable for that and its main function is to look pretty.
