The Soviet Union wasn't an absolute test for socialism, it didn't give socialism in its best possible form, in its best possible situation. But it was indeed a test for socialism, and one that it failed miserably. If it was the only test, then perhaps the failure could be blamed on the specifics of the Soviet Union rather than socialism, but it wasn't the only test, and socialism for a whole economy has failed again and again every time it has been tried.

If China collapses tomorrow which it could.....do you think it would be a fair test of capitalism?

If an Israeli kibbutz has a product that sells well, then everyone in the kibbutz does better.

If it has a product that sells well. Again you are having a small socialist organization (and in many cases the kibbutzim are less and less socialist, which itself might be considered the results of a different type of test of socialism) in the context of a wider capitalist economy.

That's because the difference between socialism and capitalism is not as great as you fear. That's why the Euro nations are able to form a hybrid by combining the two.

My point is and has been that socialism as the driving force for a whole economy is almost inevitably doomed to failure, not that pockets of socialism can't do ok.

I don't necessarily agree with you but at least you see there can be come benefit from having pockets of socialism. I do agree that in this culture the way it stands now....socialism is probably doomed to failure.
