Steve, > How much fuel is wasted by traffic jams, while very few cars are using the HOV lanes? How stupid is that?

Oh boy, let me tell you about HOV lanes here in California.

You see them everywhere, as you can imagine. Only thing is that most people using them aren't carpoolers, but rather drivers who happen to already have passengers. Since there are plenty of those vehicles on the road already, they tend to clog up the carpool lanes during rush-hour traffic.

Net effect is that the carpool lanes here aren't faster at all. But hey, we continue to build them and even have dedicated on and off-ramps to those lanes. And now, anyone driving a Toyota Pious or Honda Not-In-Sight can get a permit and take the carpool lanes without having an extra passenger.

If we only had a really good system of mass transit around here, but Californians are so spread out that it's hard to build such a system here.
