I've been doing some research on the gold rush. Free Masons were instrumental in forming the Vigilantes that put a stop to murder and robbery in Montana, and many of them became the first elected officials in the state.

Without them, the outlaws would have taken everything and the law would have had to wait until after the Civil War was over to get a foothold.

There's a faction that claims the Free Masons and Vigilantes were the bad guys and the people they hanged were the good guys. There have even been books written about this.

It's simply preposterous.

The Freemasons are just another group competing for the magisterium with their secret codes, happy handshakes and signet rings. It's just a clubhouse for senile old fools who don't have anything better to do.
