New Haven police are launching a new effort to solve the slaying of Suzanne Jovin, a student at Yale. A team of former police officers has been quietly investigating the case for much of the year and hopes its efforts will close a homicide investigation that began in 1998. Despite a hefty reward and years of investigating, no one has ever been charged in Jovin's death. Jovin was stabbed 17 times. Jovin's senior thesis adviser, James Vandevelde, was one of a pool of suspects in the case. Vandevelde repeatedly denied involvement in her death and a DNA sample from a later investigation backed up his claim. Vandevelde has since left the university and continues to criticize the New Haven Police Department for focusing on him instead of on other possible leads. The new investigative team is once again reviewing documents and questioning witnesses in the hope that an arrest can finally be made. The New Haven Police Department is expected to officially introduce the team on Friday. E-mail news tips to Eyewitness News, or dial: 866-289-0333.
