The USAF used to be part of the Army wasn't it?

That's in interesting point. If I recall my history correctly, that was taken care of in the Defense Reorganization Act of 1949. That Act renamed the War Department and established the Air Force as a separate military branch, co-equal with the Army and Navy.

It is interesting though, that it probably should have taken a Constitutional Amendment, as opposed to defining the military services to include the USAF.
