you can start with joe kennedy(ted's dad) ambassador to england who spoke highly of Germany and defended, i believe, Hitler early on. I believe Joe was called back from England and replaced. we were neutral and didn't want to get into the war. It was pearl harbor that gave the President the opening to declare war. i am going from memory on a book about Joe kennedy i read a decade ago. I did a search but these goog people suppress what you are looking for. i search for ww11 and keep getting one pop up and the rest is all against iraq. even our search engines are prone to tell us what they want us to read.

Here's my take on how we evolved over the past three generations...

Just before WWII, America was still struggling to come out of the great depression, the war was a boom to the economy, it put everyone to work... women went to work to do the job their husbands had, i.e., welding and working in the steel mills and factories, all to help America and help the troops win the fight... there was little, if any, protesting except by a few whackos, there were no spoiled brats around to whine and protest against the war, everyone pulled together, even Hollywood made patriotic films that supported America and lifted our morale here at home... celebrities join the military to serve our country, nothing like the liberal traitors of today... and even more than a decade after the war ended, the great Elvis himself joined the Army to serve his country faithfully, there were no cowards like we have today... even during the Korean conflict, Americans pulled together... the problem we see today began with Vietnam...

In Europe, those who did protest were bashing Winston Churchill for trying to start a war, he was treated and mocked in much the same way Bush is today, until Churchill finally left politics altogether, Europe failed to see the threat until it was already too late... in fact, even after hitler invaded his neighbors and broke every peace agreement, there were still those who thought we could find a way to appease hitler by "talking with him." By the end of the war, Churchill was a hero...

Here in America, by the time Vietnam arrived, we were fat and spoiled, the great depression was long gone and only a part of our distant memory, some people had washing machines, refrigerators, and eventually televisions, amazing things that made our lives easier, we boasted of "a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage," our economy was humming along, we were proud, and America was the great power that saved Europe from hitler, we gave Europe loans, and we rebuilt their cities...

Here at home, the parent generation made promises that they will make sure their children never had to suffer the way they did... as a result, and with the economy growing so well, many of them spoiled their kids completely rotten, the "new generation" became spoiled, arrogant, ungrateful, many became hippies, they dropped out of society and tuned into LSD... the spoiled brat was now protesting against authority, against the very parents that gave them everything that spoiled them in the first place... they bit the hand that fed them...

In this climate, there was no stomach to fight a war, everyone was looking for a way out, to avoid the draft, to go to Canada, to declare a major in education since anyone majoring in education was exempt from the draft... we were no longer proud, and America itself began to slouch...

Many of those same cowardly protesters who never grew up eventually entered politics and moved their way up the political ranks, and so today we have the spoiled brat protesters of the 60's like bj clinton the hildabeest, pelosi, edwards, dean, kennedy, murtha, biden, and all the usual suspects who think they can still sit around the campfire, hold hands, and sing "Give Peace A Chance" while the enemy has already attacked us at home increasingly and numerous times over the past 35 years...
