Thats my opinion. The voyage of the Beagle ended in 1836. Darwin's Origin was published in 1859, after he received a papaer from Wallace outlining natural selection (though Wallace didn't use the term) in 1858.

If the Beagle voyage really had anything to do with Darwin's theory, why the 23 year gap? Why did his theory only come out after Wallace had privately given it to him?

Darwin was a "gentleman" from a rich family. Wallace was a nobody. It was only through Darwin that he was taken seriously by the gentlemen who ruled England's scientific societies, though his experience as a naturalist was much more extensive than Darwin's. Wallace spent 12 years exploring the tropics on his own dime, selling specimens to gentlemen like Darwin.

No doubt you will say the British Government could have better used the funds fighting wars in India.


England didn't neglect their wars in India or anywhere else.
