Just a guess. We couldnt beat the axis of evil so we are coopting it to fight the real evil---sunni, wahabi, salafi, al quaeda emanating from Saudi and located in south wahiristan on pak/afgan border. Hell if we could ally with soviets to beat nazis and then live with cold war for 50 years, it seems to me we can make choices to stop the real strategic threat out there. Its not as pretty if iraq was democratic and students took over iran and North Korea threw out the bums but its better than failing in the major battle against al quaeda and its saudi fuel, and south asia location.
