Good question. It was multi-facited so I will do my best to try breaking it into manageable pieces.

1) no I don't think you were mean spirited. I am long on record as declaring extremism to be the plague of our generation. Al-Qaeda simply being the most visible and definable group.
2) I think you are wrong about Al-Qaeda being only one Arab thing. It is not only arab. It has morphed and is being fed by lots of sub-cultures from various nations.
3) Yes I mentioned minor players within nations but extremism feeds extremism and extremists from within our own ranks and others give fuel to extremists who are enemies of our nation. The goal of minor players is to get into the major leaques someday. We need a comprehensive approach if we are serious about defeating terrorism.
4) This train of thought began when I pointed out how I see some conflict on the horison between Sunni and Shi'tes of the ME and you asked who was the bigger threat. Terrorism is the biggest threat and extremism is the all consuming jist of terrorism. We have fallen off on a tangent of sorts.
