As I mentioned earlier today. I see the Shia crescent taking shape in the future from Iran to Lebanon. This will be intolerable to surrounding sunni regions. I also see a spread of Sunni fundamentalism from the Afghanistan/Pakistan frontier regions where Al-Qaeda is headquartered. Al-Qaeda has morphed, having learned some hard lessons about brutalizing their members when they got the boot from Afghanistan, and got their butts handed to them in Iraq. I thought they would come up with a new name/identity by now. In fact, it is mostly the press that uses the term Al-Qaeda, jihadist groups shun the title. For what ever reasons they are growing in numbers and popularity in Afgan/Pak frontier much like Al-Sadrs followers have done ... quietly assuming roles in the military and governments of Afgan/Pakistan from the shadows. I suspect they will continue and as long as it is done quietly not much will be done about it. Musharaf is arresting thousands including lawyers in Pakistan. His hold on power is not popular and is almost assuredly only possible under fixed elections. His military refuses to go after their militant 'brothers'. He has what claim to legitimacy??? our financial backing, and not much else. How much longer do you think Pakistanis will stand for that. So your idea of cold war may be our only venue down the road in that region, depending on how things go over the next couple of years. If so, expect to see the Sunni Crescent spreading across Asia. If not for their idiotic attack on the World Trade Towers, it would already be the case.
