It's something that bothers me as much as anything possibly could. False allegations, playing victim, and other forms of dishonor harm not only the victim of the false allegation but all of society ... it is hard to imagine how people can get so desperate for attention.

Honorable persons can have their lives ruined by false allegations and legitimate complaints are more likely to be dismissed in the wake of such deeds. Distrust of one another, the innocent as well as guilty, and lack of faith in our justice system are the natural consequence.

The article itself has some problems. The article treated Americans and Muslims in America as mutually exclusive groups, which is false. It's a natural mistake for people living in sheltered circumstances but it reveals something about the author's bias.

I have personally been on the receiving end of bomb threats and hateful rhetoric so I know such things are not mythical. I've never complained to authorities about it. On the other hand hateful treatment is not common and most Muslims I know are people living quiet lives who enjoy a cordial relationship with other non-Muslim community members. That seems to me to be the norm.

CAIR is an acronym for Council on American Islamic Relations, which implies to me they should be working to improve relationships not escalating fear and discord with false data or reporting. If they are doing anything counter to that improving relations role, I do not condone their conduct. The article is a little vague, except it accuses CAIR of hyping hate crimes, with the same conclusion I drew about false reporting.
