But let's remember we're talking about ancestors who came to this country 200-300 years ago. Thats a long time. Only a small percentage of any group in our country knows beans about their ancestors that far back. How they came to this country, their circumstances. They may know some, but consider someone who is 8th generation American or so. 2 parents, 4 grandparents, then 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256. Know anyone who knows their 256 ancestors 8 generations back? Most people don't really know all their ancestors country of origin for sure if their ancestors have been here 200+ years. They can assume or guess based on the sound of their names but I've done enough research to know spellings have sometimes changed dramatically over the last couple hundred years, so that is no sure guide. Ultimately, what your ancestors were 200+ years ago is of little importance. Also let's remember that most black people are not helpless poverty stricken losers. ..let's examine some numbers from the Census Bureau's 2004 Current Population Survey. There's one segment of the black population that suffers only a 9.9 percent poverty rate, and only 13.7 percent of their under-5-year-olds are poor. There's another segment of the black population that suffers a 39.5 percent poverty rate, and 58.1 percent of its under-5-year-olds are poor. Among whites, one population segment suffers a 6 percent poverty rate, and only 9.9 percent of its under-5-year-olds are poor. Another segment of the white population suffers a 26.4 percent poverty rate, and 52 percent of its under-5-year-olds are poor. What do you think distinguishes the high and low poverty populations? The only statistical distinction between both the black and white populations is marriage. There is far less poverty in married-couple families, where presumably at least one of the spouses is employed. Fully 85 percent of black children living in poverty reside in a female-headed household. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/WalterEWilliams/2007/10/31/are_the_poor_getting_poorer -----------------------------Most immigrants can to this country as freemen. Africans came as slaves against their will. Huge difference.......huge! Since hispanics came to this country as free men and have never been enslaved here, I take it you consider the level playing field is okay for them? No affirmative action, etc. -------------- One more thing I know you will enjoy: How Not To Be Poor by Walter Williams (May 11, 2005) ......... Avoiding long-term poverty is not rocket science. First, graduate from high school. Second, get married before you have children, and stay married. Third, work at any kind of job, even one that starts out paying the minimum wage. And, finally, avoid engaging in criminal behavior. ..........capmag.com
