John, here is a link to some photos relating to oil sands mining in Alberta. The surface mining of bitumen is an incredibly ugly process. It creates a landscape right out of Dante. It's no wonder that there is a lot of backlash up there, in spite of the economic growth and jobs that have been created. The Caterpillar earth movers used in the mining weigh 500 metric tons empty, and have tires 13 feet in diameter. ostseis.anl.gov Each photo is expandable by clicking on it.
