There is great power for good in the notion that our rights come from God. If you are an atheist you can consider god a legal fiction. The important point is that rights exist outside, independent of the framework of whatever government happens to be established. This is the foundation of our freedom and we should never surrender it.

The Fathers were afraid of a tyrannical government taking over and wanted to give the people(themselves) a fighting chance to regain control. Simple as that.
