Yes, the banks didn't force the people to borrow. But neither did the people force the banks to lend! So they both should face the consequences of their decisions.

Bankruptcy is better than debt slavery. People can walk away from their homes. They have no equity to lose anyway. And they won't exactly be homeless. They can rent the very same homes that they left - and since there are so many more empty homes thanks to all the overbuilding, they can get bargain rents.
