I am not interested in the DP as a deterrent. The taking of lives for that reason smacks too much of creating a sacrificial example to "teach" others, a terrible cheapening of human life, if that is the purpose, and one used by some horrific regimes. For me it's an ethical decision about human life. I go back and forth, because it's one issue that really can get emotional.

Centuries ago, the leading civilizations were much rougher on their criminals. We look back on the horrors of history and shake our heads in wonder.

Centuries from now, people will look back at the way we treat our criminals and they'll shake their heads in wonder.

There certainly are many studies. I haven't seen a credible and objective one that concluded the DP was not a deterrent.

Execution is the only logical payment a murderer can make for his crime, IMO. You take someone's life, you lose yours. We use the Government to do it in order to stop revenge killings that promote Anarchy.

Good old fashioned Mosaic Code. "An eye for an eye."
