HCM CITY — Vietnamese companies have so far invested US$1.38 billion abroad in 246 projects, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

In the first 11 months of this year alone, they have invested $390 million in 61 projects.

Most of the projects are in manufacturing, oil exploration, building materials, agro-forestry and fisheries and services.

While the investments are spread over 35 countries and territories, Laos and Cambodia are the biggest recipients.

Laos has attracted $583.8 million and 86 projects, and Cambodia $88.5 million and 27 projects.

Ministry officials say more and more domestic companies are looking overseas to expand.

Vietnamese companies have recently begun to invest in the Middle East, Africa, the US, and Japan.

To encourage the companies, the ministry has recently set up teams to research foreign markets and collect comprehensive information about them. Based on the research it will draft plans to further promote investments abroad.

Vietnamese companies are expected to invest around $500 million overseas next year, the officials say. — VNS
