Hell governments contribute as much to drug research as the drug companies.

And if the companies are squeezed enough, all the drug research will come from the government.

Or course, the government's contribution is part of the cost of medical care just as is that of the drug companies. Displacing the costs doesn't make those costs go away.

Whether the government or the drug companies can do R&D better and/or cheaper is another factor. I've never seen a study on the return on each dollar of tax money vs drug company R&D.
