But now, New Zealand has two distinct classes. They are the producers and the bludgers. Unfortunately, the bludgers have the numbers. Being a democracy, the bludgers can vote to increase their cut of production, leaving less and less for the producers. The producers [unsurprisingly] are voting twice. Once at the polls where they lose, and once with their feet, by leaving the country. There are other purported classes, such as "gender", "Maori", "Labour Party", "workers", but they fit nicely into the "bludger" or "producer" categories and that defines them most precisely. When people go on about "gender", they mean female and they mean that they should get preferences, privilege and tax-payer money. When they go on about Maori, they mean the government should give them power, privilege, and of course, tax-payer cash. Workers used to be the opposite of business, but now they are increasingly together in the "producer" category. Government "workers" are not actually working, though there are some crown-owned corporations where they are supposed to be working but they are really on feather-bedded bludger conditions. By "workers" I mean people actually working supplying goods and services to people who choose to buy and who might or might not select another supplier. Yes, there are some grey areas, but mostly people can be classified into producer or bludger categories reasonably precisely. "Bludger" used to be a term of contempt. Now it's the norm. Most people are bludgers in New Zealand. Hence the electoral results. They can maintain a majority because one producer can provide sufficient goods and services for a few bludgers. As more and more producers leave, the cash to pay off the bludgers will dwindle and the spiral of decline will accelerate and won't be able to be stopped as the bludgers won't be able to produce anything of value when the going gets tough.
