I agree with you on that score. But think about it. If they were to not agree to an AMT relief Bill until the Reps agreed to pay-as-you-go, then the Reps would refuse to vote for it, stalling AMT relief. If that happened, then Reps would claim that the Dems don't care about the people.

So the Dems had no choice but to agree to AMT relief without pay-as-you-go.

Same thing goes with Iraq. If they were to withold funding of the Iraq war until the Reps agreed to a time table for withdrawal, the Reps would spin it as the Dems don't care about soldiers in the field. In a time of war, just about every American is thinking about the welfare of our kids overseas on the battlefield. So the Dems really have no choice but to continue funding the war, in the hopes they get a Dem President that will eventually end it.

So Dems are playing a subtle game. Make some noise, but don't start a real fight. They are aiming for the White House. That's the real game.

In the mean time, the Reps aren't winning anyone over either with their useless Iraq war, lack of an energy independence plan, failure on social security reform, failure on fiscal conservatism, and failure to fight back against China to close that trade deficit.

So right now, the Reps are looking downright terrible.
