I would argue that most people don't adopt because of deep-seated biological reasons that make us hesitant to spend resources on someone else's genes. It's the "cuckold" effect. But that's just my hypothesis.

There are other possible biological reasons as well. Men as a rule from a sociobiology standpoint love to make babies, but don't like to rear them. That makes gay men poor candidates for potential adoptive parents by definition. Lesbians seem to have higher adoption rates.
