"There is a reason why housing is so cheap in Columbia, SC. "

Please - expound. I'm a white man who has lived in the south before. I know the words to "Dixie". Although not racially prejudiced myself, I can ignore it in others, up to a point. You're talking to a guy who moved from S. Cal. to Utah!

Oh hell. I wasn't talking culturally. Anyone who can live in Utah or deep in the heart of TX, can live anywhere. A fear of living in the South is my bias.....I know that. I was speaking economically.

Columbia is the state capitol, and has several institutions of higher learning. It has malls, metroplex movie theaters and all the accouterments of homogenized contemporary America.

Columbia consistently has had poor economic performance over the years with slow job creation. Having lived there for a few months once, I can understand why. Its poor and the population doesn't seem very well educated....and the state is not very progressive. If I were to pick a Southern city for cheaper housing/temperate climate, I'd go Charlotte or Ashland, NC, or Nashville, TN or even Charleston, SC.....although I think relatively Charleston's housing is fairly expensive compared to the other cities mentioned.
