Vietnam is still a very regimented society full of true believers. The official line (once articulated by a presidential candidate that shall remain nameless) still maintains that Americans committed war crimes during the war. Miss Vietnam was telling my friend how well the communists had treated the South Vietnamese people after the end of the war. My friend, who teaches a course on the war every two years, knows better. He told her that she was wrong and cited specific post-war events and programs. Miss Vietnam called him a "liar" and burst into tears. For some reason, she kept returning to the subject and he kept giving her more facts. The tears continued to flow.
