I think the long term trend for humanity is upward, but within the upward trend there are occasional market corrections (like WW2 etc..). It's a lot like the stock market. We learn things over time that make us better, but we sometimes forget those lessons and are doomed to repeat our mistakes.

Obviously I don't have data for death, destruction and cruelty per capita going back 2000 years but I think observation is enough.
