I tend to use the terms left and democrat too interchangeably. I should have said democrat. I can't totally agree with your observation about where they are located though. There is no shortage of bigots in NY, but most of the ones I meet are blue collar democrats. The educated white collar middle class and upper middle class people I tend to socialize with (other than in poolrooms and racetracks) belong to both parties, but I'd guess most are republicans. None are bigots.
