The forward strategy for freedom remains the only proper foundation for dealing with Israel and its neighbors. To create a leadership capable of making peace with Israel, we need local institutions and accountability of governance among Palestinians. Over time, a genuine, popular and responsible leadership will emerge which will command the profound internal credibility to make the required decisions with respect to Israel and then deliver on those decisions. This is a long process that begins with institutions and civil society, not elections and phony democracy. These principles were the foundation of the June 24, 2002 speech by President Bush, and their realization remains the only viable foundation for a process to create a responsible and moderate leadership among Palestinians.

Nadine, I guess you need a Palestinian leader that gives up Jerusalem, the right of return, the 1967 borders and as a bonus allows the settlers to stay in the West Bank, give all the fresh water up and Israel pays NO royalties for the natural gas that is being pumped from the coast of Gaza. Is that your idea of a Palestinian leader? Well my idea of an Israeli leader is a person that will give up all the land that was taken since 1948, move all the settlers out of the occupied territories, pay retribution for all the pain and suffering to the Palestinians.

I guess when those two leader meet, they might come up with a peace solution.

Conclusions:

As far as the region goes, now is the time to confront Iran decisively, not descend into sideshows. This might be able to be achieved without military force, but to ignore that option and take it off the table only emboldens the regime and makes it more likely that in the long run this will be resolved by war.

Nadine, you never cease to amaze me. You are pimping the war. The war is a no go. Please masturbate that beautiful brain of your. Why do you think the insurgency worked in Iraq? I will tell you why. The US made a deal with Iran. The Iranians will stop making trouble for the Americans in Iraq and the Americans back off on the nuclear shit stirring for the Iranians. Bush gets his victory and Iran gets its nuclear. Everyone is happy except Israel. Don't worry, Israel will be payed off. They will rebuild the oil pipeline from Kirkuk to Haifa and they will collect their fee.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks, that is one of the best situational analyses I have read on the Palestinian problem.

"Over time, a genuine, popular and responsible leadership will emerge which will command the profound internal credibility to make the required decisions with respect to Israel and then deliver on those decisions. This is a long process that begins with institutions and civil society, not elections and phony democracy. These principles were the foundation of the June 24, 2002 speech by President Bush, and their realization remains the only viable foundation for a process to create a responsible and moderate leadership among Palestinians."

Or Iran will cause the region to descend into anarchy. Anarchy works to Iran's benefit, but no other nation state with the possible exception of Syria.

"The history of the Middle East tells us nothing if not that the regionalization of local conflicts is the problem, not the solution."

Regionalization is always a problem when it is merely a mask for proxy wars. Iran is a proxy of China, who wishes to confront America, but Iran does not wish to directly confront us either. It appears they have calculated that there are sufficient democrats who will sell our our national interests for narrow short term political victories.

"the concept behind Annapolis was divorced from the President’s forward strategy of freedom. "

I think it is divorced from any view in which peace is a realistic lasting possibility. It appears that a sham Middle East peace conference at the end of a President's term seems to be a requirement that must be ticked off the checklist of things to be done.
