It seems to me that our Founding Fathers were more or less as torn on this as we are. They were human, after all.

No, only the Declaration of Independence mentions God (ie Creator). The US government is certainly not explicitly founded on Christianity, though it is founded on a Christian world-view in that:

- rights are God-given

- it accepts the view that men are fallen and thus are all liable to abuse power, thus requiring that power be divided and that checks and balances are needed to prevent abuse of power.
