In the early moments of the last debate before Iowa kicks off the state-by-state battle to choose candidates in the November 2008 election, the Republicans addressed increasing public worries about the economy nationally and in Iowa. "Any nation that no longer has economic strength sooner or later will lose its military strength, so it's a national security issue," said Arizona Sen. John McCain, who promised to push for energy independence if elected. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, whose longtime stance at the top of Iowa polls has been challenged by the fast-rising Mike Huckabee, said leaders should not "wring their hands" but "we need leaders up in Washington that will rein in excessive spending." Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor who languished in low single digits in polls in Iowa and nationally for months, has shot into the lead in Iowa in the last few weeks while gaining ground in some other polls nationally and in the early voting state of South Carolina. The rise of the former Baptist pastor, fueled in part by growing support among religious conservatives, has brought a new wave of scrutiny and criticism over his record in Arkansas and his positions. But in the early stages of the debate, Huckabee managed to stay out of the spotlight. The Democratic contenders will meet in debate on Thursday ahead of Iowa's January 3 contest.
