I don't think the FF chose checks and balances from a religious perspective. I know Jefferson and Madison didn't:

Jefferson was in France at the time of the Constitutional convention. Jefferson might have supported the Bill of Rights had he been a delegate but he wasn't and had nothing to do with the Constitution.

Madison opposed the adoption of a Bill of Rights. He was forced to accept its addition due to the opposition of "anti-Federalists" like Mason and Lee. The Bill of Rights was modeled after Mason's Virginia Declaration of Rights.
