running for president is a high stakes game... It's a no-holds barred contest in which some every political weapon available will be used in order to gain an advantage.

I think this approaches a national tragedy in which civil behaviors are thrown out in favor of victory at all costs.

My solution may not be popular in the media, but I think it should be given consideration: Do away with campaigns altogether. Forget stumping. Forget all this speechifying. Forget religious crucifixions and character assassinations. Let the candidates apply through their parties to get on the ballot, and leave room for write-ins.

Then shut the hell up until election day, and let the voters decide based on the record.

The candidate with the most satisfying record based on past performance will get elected.
