She's not preventing anyone from praying. They can pray all they want. She is, however, trying to prevent a tax supported venue from being used for a particular religion's form of prayer. Supposedly that area is 51% Christian (I think that's a low estimate). Would some Muslim families have the right to insist that thay should have their local Mullah share a few “introductory remarks"? Maybe there are some adherents of Santeria in the district. Fine, upstanding taxpayers, concerned about their kids' education. And they would like to offer a few chickens as sacrifice to bring blessings upon the school board meeting.
It may be political suicide in that part of the world, but the First Amendment is worth standing up for. There is no separation of church and state in Iran or, if the Pharisees of Texas have their way, in Pearland.
