Well, Maurice. I can claim that Einstein's theory of gravity is wrong. I can start a Gravity-Deniers forum on SI and tell everyone who believes in gravity is ignorant, stupid and probably influenced by Al Gore. That's my right. But no one need take my idea very seriously until I've proven my case. And the burden rests with me.

That's where peer-review comes in. Does my gravity theory hold water? Can the data be replicated? Does it hold up when attacked from every side? Is it found to be useful and have explanatory power?

So anyone can generate new ideas all they want. But those ideas don't stand at the same level as theories that have stood the test of time and critical attack.
