I can assure you that is not true. Go visit the philippines. See for yourslf. Except for the airfare getting there its very reasonable and many beautiful spots to see. You are judging based on media accounts of a few university students. Go into the countryside you will learn of a different Philippines. If you cant go there, next time you are in a hospital look around at the nurses. Chances are you'll find at least one Filipina ask the administration, they'll tell you they are the best. When I visit the Philippines I have to take gifts but those gifts must say MADE IN USA to be really meaninful to them. jdn

ps: Just about EVERY Filipino can speak ENGLISH, can you say that about AMERICA?

<They just didn't want us around. Pure anti-Americanism. Yankee go home.>

They did not kick us out. They just wanted a huge increase in the rent and we did not want to pay it.

Free? The Philippines haven't been a US colony for a long time, and we were leasing the bases. They just didn't want us around. Pure anti-Americanism. Yankee go home.

The Philippines became independent after WWII. Not being a US Colony did not make them free.

Starting in the 70s, they had a dictator (Marco) for about 15 years. He was in power far longer as he had been elected president for the legal max of 12 years before becoming dictator.

The real Filipino Democracy is only some 20 years old. It began when Marco fled. Our SF have been supporting that democracy effort for that entire period.

We lease bases all over the world. I see no valid reason the Philippines should have been treated different. Clark AFB was a significant strategic asset for us. The hospital there was very important during Korea and Nam and Clark was major fighter base (F-4). If I recall correctly we also had bombers there hitting Japan at the end of WWII.

We were not told to leave. Sure there was talk. But the debate among Filipino politicians on whether to extend the agreement was ongoing up to when the volcano wiped out Clark. That ended the opportunity. The agreement was still in effect when the eruption occurred. One could reasonably view the debate as a negotiation.

I don't know why we are surprised that others wish for us to leave. Most Americans are screaming for foreigners to leave the USA.
