McCarthy was an anti-communist. He may or may not have been exaggerating the evidence of communist subversion he possessed. There was no Gitmo then, but if McCarthy had gotten his way there would have been, lots of Gitmo's, to put away anyone liberal or concerned about worker's rights, civil rights, peace, justice or equality. Funny coming from a guy who thinks conservative s/b be locked up and tortured.
