McCarthy branded any liberal or libertarian minded person a communist. His victims included some of our greatest artists, anyone who organized for unions, anyone who dared talk to anyone in the Soviet Union, anyone who questioned the government, etc. If he been allowed to continue he would have persecuted millions. All in the name one Bushie style one party far rightwing military-corporate rule.

McCarthy was a true fascist. Not much difference at all between him and German Nazis, who by the way also persecuted "communists", defined then as people who wanted their civil rights and workingman's rights.

Now let's get something straight. The original "communists" were simply poor workers during the Great Depression who wanted rights and to feed their families. John Steinbeck would have qualified as their main spokesman for instance. The last thing in the world they imagined was that someday A-holes would use "communism" as an excuse to start new police states where people had no rights at all. Therefore the Soviet Union wasn't communism, it was fascism with a communist facade.

Therefore, the entire argument against communism is flawed. for instance Johnny Cash credited "communism" (that is the community helping each other survive with help from the government) in its early stages with saving his family from starvation in the 40's.

Without the Soviet military police state elements, communism is actually a positive thing. But like capitalism it is ruined by corrupt bastards who cheat and steal and want to grab ultimate power, so communism was ruined by tyrants. And McCarthy was a tyrant too. No better than the Soviets. The same deal with another name. McCarthy believed in a one far rightwing state ruling everyone and giving them no right to free speech, dissent or to think for themselves. That is not America. That is fascism. And the Soviet Union was fascism too. They both were. But We The People stopped McCarthy and we're stopping the far right Bushies like Cheney as well.
