Obama said the healthcare industry is bound to have some say ina healthcare solution. That is only logical, IMHO. I don't see a screeching screed against evil corporate America carrying the day in 2008.

Nor do I think that's precisely what Krugman was arguing. The various drug and healthcare outfits whose livelihood depends on the present structure and who will do everything possible to keep serious change from occurring in the healthcare industry, will do everything to stop it.

It will take some serious smarts to outsmart them.

It's very easy to take an anti-corporate stance and flip in into anti-prosperity and anti-growth attacks from the other side in a general election. Most people work for those big companies one way or another, and the electorate is hardly a lumpen proletariat waiting to rise up against their capitalist exploiters.

As for the first part of your response, there's now, I'm told, a good bit of polling evidence that a class based populist campaign polls extremely well in many states, states with a good many electoral college votes. Moreover, there's much anxiety over the globalization, job loss issue.

Edwards makes the claim right now that, in a general election, he polls better than Clinton against Republicans. I haven't kept track of those polls all that much recently since I think it's still too early. But my guess is there are polls that say that.

Dale -

I agree. And there is no reason to assume that one can't put a lot of pressure on the drug and health insurance companies while they are sitting at a big table. I'm sure Obama isn't actually naive enough to believe that they are going to just give up all their profits for the public good.
