If I were designing Obama's general election campaign the theme would not be "change" which can mean anything, it would be "New Politics". And every time the usual old guttersniping began, hold it up and label it "Old Politics". Using the familiar tactic of repetition, a lot of people would come to associate negative campaigning with the stale status quo that we know much of the electorate now despises. Otherwise it's just two pols shouting "You suck more than you say I do!" at each other for six months.
