McCarthy hated freedom of speech and the Constitution. He considered anyone who dissented from the military-industrial Cold War ideology a "communist" and fair game to put away or ruin, including great artists like Woody Guthrie, Aaron Copland and Paddy Chayevsky, plus anyone who wanted to fight for union rights or civil rights for blacks. It was very similar to the way Hitler's Brown Shirts worked. Weed out the smart dissenters and take them out.
