Thanks... yes, this is very interesting. All of us have to deal with these questions. To bring up another example, Dostoyevsky was asking - I am paraphrasing, of course - "What good is it to save the world if in the process you must harm one child?" Gandhi, as I recall, argued that not only ends do not justify the means, but to the contrary, the means one uses will determine - define - the ultimate outcome. No easy answers - unless you are a true believer in an overriding big idea - be it the superiority of a certain race, or religion, or what you believe to be a just political system. Many on the Left believe in the intelligence of human planners - and not in the chaotic ways of free markets - and free humans.
