Yes, the Left always believed that "the end justifies the means". The thinking goes that the most good for most people is worth fighting for - even if along the way some social groups and individuals may have to lose their rights and be harmed. It is inevitable that centrist, top down solutions will end in failure. The concept that the best thing a Government can do is to create and maintain a social and legal infrastructure which would allow free markets and free individuals to perform their infinitely complex and seemingly chaotic balancing acts - is relatively new. The idea that freedom "works best" is somewhat counterintuitive, and many people find it hard to accept - and still prefer to trust various empowered "experts" and leaders.
