Hi Frank,

The world's largest SAN used to be in Maryland, (see "Enemy of the State"). In the mid 1970s. I worked on a temporary storage device that used CDC 9766 300 MB drives ("washing machines" using 14" platters) mounted two high and filling both walls of a hallway (66 GB spinning) that could hold data for up to 24 hours. Each drive had a 5 hp air-powered head actuator, and that hallway was so noisy that hearing protection was required.
