One of the biggest problems in the US is that the majority of our income tax comes from a smaller and smaller minority at the top of the income scale. We've crossed the point where half the households pay little to no income tax. It's easy to demand this or that from the government if you know you'll never have to pay for it, if you can push the cost off on someone else. On the whole, people only make those hard economic decisions about what to give up in order to get something else with their own hard earned money.
