The flight from currency that had begun with the buying of diamonds, gold, country houses, and antiques now extended to minor and almost useless items -- bric-a-brac, soap, hairpins.

Don't know about the 1st paragragh, but the 2nd one is already happening in the Cleveland area....stealing copper and aluminum from homes and businesses, even churches, catalytic converters off cars(for platinum/palladium whichever one they're using these days). Places like Cleveland and Detroit are facing tough times, and it's going to get worse. Much of the country hasn't felt this, but the rust belt has.
