That whole article can be summed up in the phrase, "40 percent of Mormonism's converts in 1980 came from Baptist backgrounds".

Religion is basically a business and the Mormons are "competitors" with the Baptists.

If the Mormons just "confined" themselves to Utah and didn't "compete" so hardily with the Baptists, then the Baptists would probably have no problem with them.
